HEALTH CAMP
Shadipur, New Delhi, 23.12.2017

A medical health care camp had been set up in Shadipur on 23rd December 2017 by the Swashrit NGO. In the camp, proper medical treatment of the people of Shadipur and nearby area was done and remedial measures were provided, all free of cost, including the basic medicines required for an early recovery.

Maitri and Abhinav, students, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi) were given the task of taking down the details of the people who came for this health check-up. (List of the same has been enclosed/ uploaded) and guide the people for the same. The people encouraged to do simple activities on a regular basis to get rid of the excessive body pain.

A Blood Pressure (BP) check was performed on every patient. After that, they were sent to their respective doctors where they were appropriately given the right directions regarding their health. The three doctors carefully listened to the problems the patients were facing and provided an appropriate solution to curb it. Majority of the people were suffering from chronic back pain, swelling, watery eyes and high/low B.P.

This is a prime example of how the community can be served appropriately if we are interested. We need not be high-profiled citizens to help the society change. It is the willingness and enthusiasm which comes out from within that encourages you to work for the betterment of others.

EDUCATIVE LESSONS TO THE UNDERPRIVILEGED

From 27th December 2017 – 6th January 2018, we went to Karol Bagh as per a part of our community service under the Swashrit NGO. Our prime concern was to teach a group of children basic fundamentals of Mathematics, English and Hindi, apart from various other topics in which they faced difficulties.

From a 3 year old Neetu Singh to a 15 year old Anjali, about 25 children come to the Buddha Mandir in Karol Bagh from 3pm to 5pm to gain education. Special attention is given towards the weaker students amongst them.

Many innovative methods of teaching were also applied, to name a few:

HIGHLIGHTS:
1. PICTIONARY: Drawing an object and asking the others to name it in English and hindi with the correct spelling. This enabled the children to get visually connected to the object, which helped in quick memorization.
2. ODD-EVE: The famous number game was taught to make them familiarize with the concept of 'odd and even' numbers. This small game also helps in quick addition due to its fast pace.
3. BOOM: This game helps the children to learn tables quickly. A number like 5 or 7 was selected and anytime its multiple came, the word BOOM was said out loud.
4. CONNECT: The last letter of the first word was made to be the starting letter of the new word. The children learned many new words in this manner.

PAPERCRAFT WORKSHOP

In the final days, a paper craft workshop was done. The students were asked to make a 'Mat' using newspaper strips. They were taught the following things in the process:

1. Accurately folding paper from one edge to another
2. Applying glue in the proper manner in order to minimize wastage and maximize efficiency
3. Giving thickness to a thin strip by subsequent folding
4. Cutting off the edges in a neat manner
5. Coloring and different shading techniques
6. Creative use of material in order to decorate it

Making a simple mat out of newspaper also helped them learn various things. First of all, they were asked to know the names of the color they using by frequently checking the label of the color. The came to know about the various shades and tones which can be used while coloring.

Secondly, they were asked to share some of the material and help other children who were struggling with the same job after they themselves were finished. This enabled the children to bond within themselves and with us too.

Thirdly, they learnt how NOT to waste material and turn something so ordinary like the newspaper into something beautiful and of common use. Creating best out of waste was the core idea of the exercise.

In these health camp, doctor and counsellor from Fortis Escorts hospital had come to educate children on various aspects of health and hygiene and guide them through the right ways of living so that they spread this awareness around and many young lives are prevented from illnesses and death.

The main highlight of these camps was the talk given by one of the doctors, the different topics of these talks were ‘prevention of various hazardous diseases; one of the main ones discussed though was Dengue Prevention, the dread of the season. The children were made aware of the different methods of prevention from Dengue caused by Aedes mosquito; some of them were wearing light full-sleeved clothes, using mosquito repellents, cleaning water in coolers and plant plates regularly etc. The other topics included general health and hygiene, prevention from diseases of cold weather etc

The talk was followed by the different queries that children asked with respect to the lecture and a one-on-one consultation with each child beginning with taking in the basic demographic details of each one to understand their health related concerns and help them. This session was further followed by counselling in group wherein children with similar set of problems were dealt with together.

The teachers at the NGO helped in the successful completion of the camp by providing the doctors the required information about each child. The children too were very enthusiastic and attentive which further lead the doctors to concluding that more camps like this will be taken up in the nearby future.

The health counseling camps served the purpose of empowering the children with enough information and awareness with regards to their health and problems confronted by them. Moreover, the aim of imparting the right kind of healthy living strategies upon the kids so that there is a sense of control, sense of right and wrong and indulgence in well thought out actions was fulfilled with the help of the talk and consultation successfully.
